Nambavan - Devushka Naprotiv (Po Glazam)

Here is an older, perhaps wiser version of Nambavan.  He has appeared on the BSWC radio program here, here, here, here, and here. He also has a track in the One-a-Day feed that was posted February 20, 2007.  Ok, we really like the guy.

This tune is from a WM Recordings release from May 20, 2011 called Modnay Discoteka.

Nambavan is Linar Bilalov.  He is originally from Kazan, the capital of  Tatarstan (also known as the "Third Capital of Russia").

We found his origin story on his website:
...a bright young man with a passion for Rodchenko, Bauhaus and '70s gay disco, thrust into a vortex of small-town degradation. He christened himself Nambavan (a corruption of Number One) and recorded a couple of albums' worth of aggressive minimal techno with crass, no-holds-barred lyrics. "Chechnya on the Dancefloor," "So Many Men, So Little Time," "I Passed Your Girlfriend Around," "Babu Po Ebalu!!!" were all shock value and no hidden message. The music, however, was quite remarkable for something recorded on a home computer with a cheap guitar and a karaoke mike. His ear-scarring barrage of raw hate and stories of abuse spread over the Web like fire through a city dump. A gig in Berlin and a dozen good reviews later, Linar decided that simply singing from the dark corners of a thug's skull was not enough.
We are glad to get reacquainted.

D'r Sjaak - Likkubakkus

D'r Sjaak has two appearances on BSWC - The show.  They are here, and here.  Today's track appeared on on a net compilation from the Netlabel Coalition.  This various artists release is found in the archive.org collection of WM Recordings.  It was released April 15, 2010 and there are some very tasty musical finds on it.

D'r Sjaak has never appeared in the BSWC One-a-Day feed.  Until today.  He is from Limburg in the Netherlands.

His 2006 WM Recordings release, Schijnheiligen includes the following description:
D'r Sjaak is depressed, yet happy. Drunk, yet sober. Understated, yet danceable. Sleeping, yet awake.
Likkubakkus is from his 2009 release:  Speees KojBoj.

Happy Elf - Come Back

Wow. It has been a long time. Thanks to Subsystem for getting this started again.

When I decided to post something, the first thing that came to mind was Happy Elf...what is he up to these days? Well, WM Recordings has a release by the contented dutchman. Sex Machine was released in June and has this wonderful little tune.
More grooves, more lyrics and another guest vocalist: welcome to SEXMACHINE, a mini album filled with sounds of legendary synthesizers and dirty guitars.
The title track is not too shabby either, in fact, drop all five tunes into your hard drive for the complete experience.

There, that wasn't too hard.

BSWC One-a-Day: The Fuzz - God Bless the Radio

A classic.

From the very first release of Chenard Walcker's netlabel, Free Sample Zone comes this incredible slice of the era. The tune was originally released in 1994 and rereleased on FSZ ten years later in 2004.

The Fuzz explained in the original notes why they refused to pay royalties for using samples. They encouraged artists to follow their policy. They had no success, neither with the music nor with the Free Sample movement. They released their following albums under the name of The O.

I'll be on the air later tonight. BSWC-The Show will be featuring tribute material from the WM Recordings Chenard Walcker tribute release....look for some classic Walcker stuff to go along with the feature release.

BSWC One-a-Day: Otis Fodder - Nous aimons oui

The first volume of the Chenard Walcker tribute release is up at WM Recordings. A impressive beginning, I must say.

Chenard Walcker is the plunderphonic wunderkind responsible for all sorts of audio madness. Unfortunately, he was stricken and is now recovering.

Chenard Walcker, a friend of the online music world, is slowly recovering from a diabetic coma. His brother reports that he is not physically suffering. He fell into the coma in September 2006, and is now working on speech development and object differentiation.

We all are hoping for a full recovery. Chenard's presence is missed.

If you aren't familiar with the Wakka Chikka Wakka Chikka that Comfort Stand put out, then maybe you ought to mosey over there and check it out.

BSWC One-a-Day: 3Sacchetti - Bobo-yeah. matteo e un eco-mostro

Released just a few days ago on WM Recordings, Bora! Bora! Mr. Motto by 3Sacchetti got me excited right away! 3Sacchetti is three musicians who had a desire to create something new. The began playing together in 2004.

"the members began with a standard jazz order, then they made an effort to change... it resulted in a strange balcanic music with wild and bizarre melodies."

Don't get too comfortable with any one theme, rhythm, or genre... every track on this release will surprise you with how well it bounds from one idea to the next.

Excellent release, fresh and fun.

BSWC One-a-Day: Gorowski - basin in my home

And we are graced with a totally fab release from WM Recordings, Gorowski's Simulator's can [WM067] ("Fortified with minerals from the electro anarchic"). This release is totally tops. Track to track, just bliss.

Simulator's can
is Gorowski's third release on WM Recordings.

"Gorowski has been dabbling in electronic music production for around 6 years, after a long DJing career in the sunny town of Hull, UK. He began DJing and promoting club nights in 1990, and was one of the first promoters to stage live performances from Fila Brazillia, at the Silhouette Club in Hull (1992/3). Gorowski maintained contact with the Pork Recordings stable for the next decade and now DJs with the '(in)famous' Porky at the Vibe Bar in London. Gorowski and Porky run a monthly Friday night called 'Larkin Out' which has been voted 'Critics Choice' by London's Time-Out magazine on a number of occasions. The night provides Gorowski with an opportunity to play and test out some of his tuneage."
This track reflects everything I love about experiencing fresh music. It is totally funky, energetic, beautiful, well constructed, exotica -- and you may not know this, but I love exotica.
It is my pleasure to present you with the opening track to a release you should not miss.

BSWC One-a-Day: Jan Turkenburg - Awakening (Sending Packages to the moon)

:: WM Recordings :: releases :: WM065 Jan Turkenburg - Packages to the moon

What an opportunity! I get to blog a WM Recordings new release before Subsystem gets to it. I was crossing my fingers yesterday when this was released, hoping that he wouldn't post it. And, here I am today.

Jan Turkenburg is very cool, indeed. I first discovered his particular brand of cutting and pasting at Comfort Stand and have since enjoyed his contributions to WM Recordings.

A school teacher, Turkenburg does his thing in Zwolle, Overijssel, The Netherlands.

A recurring theme in his work is space travel (this includes a lovely little number mixing a children's chorus with samples from various versions of the TeeVee show, Star Trek). This release's title track is space related and I wanted to share it.

BSWC One-a-Day: The Rabbits - Blow You Crow

No digging for today's choice, WMRecordings just released something great into the world.

This album is full of fun, interesting, creative, gems. It is an unselfconscious trip through lots of mixed up genres. Music that you will like, your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife will like, your children will like(maybe not every song for your kids, listen before playing) , and your dog might even like. Releases like this make me feel extremely lucky to be a creative commons music junky.

As it says on WMRecordings, "if you like music, you'll love the music here. Sign up today for a low, low introductory price of 51 minutes of your time."

The rabbits is Matthew Orzeszek - no address provided, but I think he's from the UK.

Today's selection is like a mashup of beatles / zappa / elvis costello / and pure exotica. Great sounds. Great music. Excellent high energy bounce.

enjoy (you lucky bastards)

BSWC One-a-Day: Daghoti - Percipience fiction

My hunger for Creative Commons exotica can never be quelled. Yesterday, May 15 2007, WM Recordings released a various artists release called Mystic Moods [WM063]. Featuring some of my all time favorites like Jan Turkenburg, Lee Rosevere, and Happy Elf and also featuring a number of artists that I have never heard before. The notes summarize what this release delivers with "it's music for your undisputed pleasure...!" - I can't dispute that!!

I chose a track that I felt had a particularly good exotica feel to it, a little sex, a little spoken word, rich with stimulating sounds. Percipience fiction will stimulate you. This my first time listening to the work of Daghoti, and I am now digging for more. On WM he has a release from 2005 called i've got braces, too! [WM029] that you should check out.

Overall Mystic Moods is awesome! Make sure to download the entire experience. WMRecordings is consistently delivering interesting, fresh, and exceptionally thought provoking music - we're lucky to have such a netlabel.

BSWC One-a-Day: Sminky - Puppies in Space

I've been following an interesting forum thread at archive.org about women and netlabel music. Sminky came up in the thread, although WM Recordings isn't sure of the artist's gender.

Today's selection is from a WM release, Before Live [wm043] that came out last June. Here is what WM has to say about Sminky:

Sminky lives in the legendary land of Siberia next to a huge pine forest. In his/her childhood she (he?) sang in a local church-choir and theatre and played violin. Later he (she?) tried to sing in different Siberian rock-groups. And now, for about two years she (he?) has just been sitting at home and doing music with his/her PC.
Lovely Tune. Hope you enjoy it.

BSWC One-a-Day: Klaz* - Tosvin

It has been surprisingly warm in Berkshire County the past couple of days and this morning we were greeted by heavy rains which cooled the earth and calmed the approach of summer. The sun is just starting to come through the clouds as I post...

This is indeed a rare piece of music, and it is quite literally a piece: Tosvin is a part of the twenty-minute song Esdra from a coming release on WM Recordings, Glistqwid. Tosvin is a powerful soundscape which moves through several distinct modes in this single track - incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, natural and unnatural sounds. I'm really looking forward to Glistqwid, but for now, make sure you download this entire release, WM062 Kachtil which was added to the Creative Commons universe on the 8th of May, just three days ago.

BSWC One-a-Day: Hanns Ahring/Jean Quist/Maren Schram - Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks 1

I have been meaning to post something from the latest WM Recordings release, Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks [WM061]. Here it is.

This composition was released on April 5 and is a real gem. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a sucker for the saxophone. Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks is a wonderful exploration of the possibilities that exist when you pair a traditional instrument with modern sampling techniques.

It is presented in the form of a virtual concert performance.

All in one, the structure is somewhat conventional with a soloist on soprano- and tenor saxophone, accompanied by a full orchestra or small instrumental groups like a jazz combo, a string quartet or a drum band. Sometimes one or two additional soloists act as ‘side kicks’ to the principal soloist.

All movements of this version of Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks are constructed with samples. In other words: virtual music for the virtual community!
With a weekend of wind and rain in the forecast, this will be an excellent soundtrack. I hope it works where you are right now.

BSWC One-a-Day: Thiaz Itch - Chevile

I love following a Coconut Monkey Rocket post with fantasmagorical exotica. From WMRecordings, Thiaz Itch released El baile de los fantasmas WM059 on March 5th. For reasons not completely clear to me

They post this album as:

"a collection of horror and frightening musics from 2005 to 2007. It blends dark ambient and ghostly beats together, recounting a phantasmal stunning story."

El baile de los fantasmas works very well as a complete composition. It begins with Heute Mplon, a 1 minute intro reminiscent of both The Nutcracker and March to the Scaffold, the 4th movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. But it's not done yet, the album mixes low fi electonic sounds with haunting melodies and fast moving beats.

Awesome, awesome joy for subsystem7!! I hope you find some joy...

BSWC One-a-Day: Elmaes - 5 (Cookie five goes mad in East Dulwich)

From WMRecordings (one of my absolute favorite netlabels) WM060: Elmaes - Geburah! Variations on the number 5; another big winner.
"You can't use butterfly language when speaking to a caterpillar."

The entire release drives forward as if as a whole containing the ambition and desire to find resolution through a pervasive chant. Yet, it is fabulous in its ability to keep you from finding a place of easy resolution, rather your brain is firing and questioning from beginning to end. Voice, percussion, and instrumentation woven cunningly together. I like the dialog created with a foundation of the sitar and tablas layed heavy with cyclical british vocals.

I hope you enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Spheriot - Mindless

Just a few days ago on WMRecordings a self proclaimed one man show, Spheriot, released Livingroom orbits. The track I chose for you is a guitar meditation and a well orchestrated soundscape, called Mindless, it didn't feel mindless to me.
"...this is my peaceful and harmonic counterweight to the deconstruction of musical structures I do with my noise-project Zloty Dawai that you might download on WM Recordings as well."

Here is Mindless, enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Nambavan - Otar Kushanashvile

Direct from the Russian Federation Republic of Tatarstan via WM Recordings comes Nambavan with his release, Sex Drugs and Russian Girls [WM031]. This is an absolutely wild outing that follows his WM release, Chechnya on a Dance Floor [WM022].

There isn't really much I can add to this post other than to tell you that I love the concept of electro-disco with Russian lyrics...it doesn't get any better.

The release notes do give us a little on Nambavan:
Nowadays he works with his pc, a $80 guitar and a Casio keyboard. His musical diet consists of Blondie, the Sex Pistols, Cerrone, Sonic Youth, Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop, The Doors, Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer, Madonna, Supermax, and the Bee Gees.
And from MySpace:
At his home in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, where few make their own music, Bilalov started out by enrolling in a music school to learn the guitar, but was expelled for not being able to remember songs.
The world is a wonderful place.

BSWC One-a-Day: Chenard Walcker - Middle

Back to Comfort Stand for today's post, and back to one of Biotic's favorite artists (and mine) - Chenard Walcker. What is cool about this track, and this release csr046, is that it is remixed bits of csr001 through csr044. I chose Middle because it contains some of my favorite bits from people like Martinibomb, Mr. Melvis, Otis Fodder, and Bruce Lenkei ... but it should be noted that the entire release is a good one.

Of Chenard: "Chenard Walcker was raised upon no secret formula but this one : Surrealist altruism. So, he became a cut and paste addict." He is a genius in this space and always produces excellent work into the commons. Unfortunately in September 2006, he fell into a diabetic coma. and is now working on speech development and object differentiation. WM Recordings is putting together a tribute album, and if you want to contribute, the deadline is coming up soon on Jan 31.

BSWC One-a-Day: Happy Elf - My MySpace

Happy Elf has been a favorite of mine since I first discovered him on WM Recordings, the prolific Dutch netlabel. The Elf has a couple of releases there, both of them worth the download.

He is also a friend of mine on MySpace...imagine that. With that in mind, today we share his MySpace homage, My MySpace from his release, Together.

The release notes describe the release's sound:
O.K. sometimes you believe this album was made in the eighties of last century, but what the heck.... those were (unlike the present) the days of musical voyages of discovery.
O.K., so now I know why I'm drawn to these tunes...Enjoy Happy Elf!
