BSWC One-a-Day: Funkatron - Stoppin my Mind

Just recovering from the bump fest that was BSWC-The Show last night. Wow, I was out for a couple of weeks and the show just leapt out of control...a real bump fest.

Only appropriate then that I post something from Bump Foot, the Japanese netlabel the very next morning. Say hello to Funkatron.

Funkatron is from Slovakia. The release is called Space EP. Laying down a sort of minimal house sound with some serious bump. Just continuing on from where I was last night. (BSWC 4.28.07 should be posted today, I hope). [update 4.29.07 9:38 AM: Unfortunately, both of my recording events failed, so I have about 14 minutes of the show. I won't bother posting it. Sorry.]

BSWC 04.28.07: Dancin' with the Gods

Yep. I'm back and ready to put some creative commons licensed, netlabel music out on the table. I don't know if it is a revolution or anything (pretty exciting if it is, I have to say), but this a sure bet to be fun.

As always, if you are reading this sometime between 9 and 11 pm Eastern (-5 Greenwich) on Saturday night you can listen to our stream.

BSWC One-a-Day: Simon B - Darkleaves (Live Feat. Florence Chitacumbi)

Vintage Drum'n Bass for today's selection. Released by Bern netlabel, Realaudio.ch in 2003, this Simon B collection called Morro [rabr001] is smooth and sweet.

Darkleaves includes the vocals of Angolan, Florence Chitacumbi.

From the release notes:
...influenced by his studies of brasilian rhythms. involved in various highly respected projects as drummer and laptop-producer for more than ten years he cooperated with many worldwide respected musicians, like for instance bern's own jojo mayer and fabian kuratli. for realaudio he recorded brilliant vocal-tracks with the angolan florence chitacumbi and the portuguese liliana ferreira, a.k.a. maozinha.

Guilty Pleasure Alert: Found this one by following a Curator's Choice link from the archive.org homepage. It isn't usually that easy.

Thanks to Subsystem for grabbing a day for me when things started getting out of control this week. Back in the swing now and look for a wild playlist for tomorrow's BSWC-The Show.

BSWC One-a-Day: October Rust - Brainsaw

Today's choice: Brainsaw by October Rust from their EP, Breitseite. Satisfying evocative grinding techno which plays on the very fringes of trance without losing sight of its sentient nature. Definitely a Friday night time to hit the clubs selection. October Rust, Fabian and Simone, is a German/Brazilian couple based in Amsterdam. I really liked this EP, and look forward to hearing more of their work.

In Digital Diamond's Philosophy, they assert that "..we especially want to offer deep techno and trance music with soul," which is certainly true of this release, their 3rd.

BSWC One-a-Day: Chunga Tribe - Up in The Bing

Released April 25, 2007 on archive.org Not If... But When is a "Hip-Hop commentary on life in the turn of the 21st Century." Although it was challenging to find any data on Chunga Tribe, they hail from the netlabel Black Rhombus sound system out of Brooklyn, NY.

I know this is a late in the day post, but good things come to those who wait. "For too long now, you've been a disease to the system." This is another surfing through the latest releases on archive.org, and what to my surprise should appear, but a reference to Great Barrington, the home town of WBCR-LP 97.7FM, the terrestrial mothership of Black Sweater, White Cat. Maybe GB is the Bing. Maybe not, but you'll enjoy this track.

Enjoy more hip-hop from Chunga Tribe and download the rest of the album.

BSWC News: Internet Archive Changes The Way They Count Downloads

The Internet Archive announced today that they are shifting the way they count and report downloads of material at the site. Until today they only counted direct downloads from their site. In other words, you needed to be at archive.org to have your download count in IA's Batting Average for the item.

Now, they are going to count downloads of files that have direct links from other sites. This should have a big impact on netlabels and other independent music distributors hosted by IA.

The change certainly makes a lot of sense. It will provide a more realistic and meaningful statistic than the old Batting Average.

BSWC One-a-Day: Bob Powell - I'm So Happy

A Big Smile, by Brandon Chalk

Today's pick "I'm So Happy" is from the 2002 release by Bob Powell, Leftover Noodles. A little like a grungier violent femmes (if thats possible). Nice loud acoustic guitar, brash vocals, excellent lyrics, great mixing, attribution - sharealike

"Bob Powell's music reminds me of what punk rock would sound like if it had originated in the deep south by a bunch of drunk, redneck moonshiners." -Goos Reviews

You'll enjoy the entire album, especially if you are not easily offended. Thanks Bob!!

BSWC One-a-Day: yeah pretty boy - bunny v2

From the netlabel beatismurder.com comes this delicious pick today, bunny v2, by yeah pretty boy! (Who is nice to your mom) I just discovered this netlabel this morning and am liking it a lot. The website is beautifully illustrated and creatively put together, but unfortuinately hard to link to -- so you'll need to do your own digging around.

Fun, bouncy (maybe hoppy), like music to my ears. It reminds me of everything I always wanted carnivals to be but never found them to be. You'll enjoy this, and you'll enjoy beatismurder.com.

BSWC One-a-Day: Chico Correa & Electronic Band - Bossinha (Aquilez Remix)

If you haven't already figured it out I'm here to tell you that Bump Foot is a phenomenal netlabel. My tastes tend more towards the "foot" side of the operation...there you have it.

Chico Correa and Electronic Band put this net gem out last October. I missed it then, but sniffing around Bump Foot these last few days turned it up.

These guys are from Brazil and lay down a nice fusion of sounds.

BSWC One-a-Day: Uniquetunes - Bitch City Grooves

From the "Foot" Side of Bump Foot comes a wonderful collection by Uniquetunes. This brand new release (April 21, 2007), Inner Smile Volume 2 [foot042] follows an earlier volume that was released by Red Netlabel.

The release consists of Uniquetunes' unreleased, strange and never-heard-before material and there are some real gems here, one of which we present as today's One-a-Day.

BSWC One-a-Day: Crepusculum - Away with Words

Some days you just don't need them.

Here is the second volume of Electronica Unplugged [aer006] continuing on from the first unplugged release [aer005].

A very nice tune from Crespusculum. They are also responsible for a very fine release on 12rec called Sky Diaries EP [12rec.036]

BSWC Video: Netwaves Live Belgium

A very nice montage from antidata and our friends at Netwaves.

BSWC One-a-Day: Ongori feat. John Smeck - Orbita Business

I didn't want to let the day slip by with a note. Dars Records has posted a huge collection by various artists to recognize the day.

The release is called Space Will Be Ours [Dars07] and went up on archive.org on April 12. It is divided into Parts A and B:

Part A - ambient, psycho, electroacoustic, avant-garde, experimental, sound art, etc.

Part B - electro, post-IDM, electronica, etc.

Today's selection is from Part B.

On April, 12, 1961 Jury Gagarin made the first space flight in history of mankind (on the spacecraft "East 1"), in 1 hour of 48 minutes circled the globe and safely landed in the vicinity of village Smelovki of the Saratov area.

In honor of this event people of Russia annually celebrates this day as - The Day of Astronautics, the greatest day in a life of mankind.

Space will be ours! - we believe that mankind cannot be stopped in the further research and studying of space, far planets and galaxies.

We are a little late, but it is never too late to join in a celebration of ultimate human dominion over the universe.

BSWC One-a-Day: Tropico esmeralda - Merengon

Be patient as this High Quality (256K) mp3 downloads, good things come to those who wait. Released just yesterday [SERN 19] Rifas, juegos y espectĂ¡culos, by TrĂ³pico esmeralda is a described as relentless bitterness disguised as happiness:

"Rifas, juegos y espectĂ¡culos presents rhythms, harmonics and textures that bring the listener to the winding frontiers of serenity and constant restlessness."

I chose Merengon, a clever mix of voice & captured sound, 8-bit, beats, and latin themes. It dances frenetically from start to finish.

This album is #19 in a string of releases from the media project SERIES media located in MedellĂn Colombia. SERIES compiles and distributes unpublished independent latinamerican musical works.

Enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Finn the Giant Meets Beatsquad - Hospital Dub

"I need a hospital because I've fallen and broken my heart in two..." and with that line I knew that this tune had to be a One-a-Day pick.

We are sticking with the dub theme that Subsystem started yesterday. This one is from Finn the Giant at Giant Sounds and I discovered it via the Swiss blog, Starfrosch.

Finn the Giant does dub remix with a tune by the Swedish reggae group, Beatsquad.

If you like these sounds, then you will want to check out the Giant Sounds Net 7 inch catalogue 2005 - 2006 at archive.org. A collection of 12 tunes filled with dub joy.

This one is a lovely tune that made me smile.

BSWC One-a-Day: alionsonny feat. Colin Mutchler - Everyday Choices

Typical English Weather
by _moonpie
It's raining here in Massachusetts, so here's a little dub for you today. Found this on archive.org, just released into open source audio. This is a remix by alionsonny of an acapella piece that Colin Mutchler posted on ccMixter. There are a number of great remixes, top among them Careful" by teru.

But this one caught my attention today. Really nice remix. Good feel, good treatment on Colin's message.

Enjoy.

BSWC Video: Schlock - Bring Me Back the Pills

Subsystem posted this tune as a One-a-Day on April 3. You can find his post and the tune here...

The video version is a little scary and spooky...

BSWC One-a-Day: radio SSB - Once You Know

Fresh tunes from the Netlabel, Bump Foot. This release by radio SSB was released overnight and features a sort of techno-powerpop sound. The collection is entitled And Right Now [bump031].

Tatsu curates the sound at Bump Foot, a Japanese netlabel that has quite a number of classic net releases to its credit. Bumpfoot is organized into two sections: bump which features techno and house; and foot, supplying ambient, IDM, electro pops, etc.

Tatsu's day job is with Japanese Internet Radio "Radio307.com". He has this to say about radio SSB:
"I was impressed by their sound, this must be one of the most splendid release! A collection of radio SSB tunes for free download. 13 tracks of trance-pop flavour for dance music lovers and others..."
Say hello to Bumpfoot and radio SSB.

BSWC 04.14.07: Biotic Rests, Subsystem Sits In

I'm taking the night off. Thanks for the spell, Subsystem!

Another highlite tonight is Netwaves #016 which features Marco Raaphorst. They play some remixes and CC mastering projects he has been involved with recently. Netwaves is a netlabel-centric show originating in Belgium. They interview Marco and since the language of Netwaves is Dutch they talk to him in his native tongue. We spoke with Marco in English last year. You can find that BSWC Interview here...

Netwaves airs on WBCR-LP, the Mothership, at 11:00 pm right after BSWC-The Show. It is the last hour of 3 hours of Creative Commons music on Saturday nights.

BSWC One-a-Day: Hanns Ahring/Jean Quist/Maren Schram - Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks 1

I have been meaning to post something from the latest WM Recordings release, Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks [WM061]. Here it is.

This composition was released on April 5 and is a real gem. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a sucker for the saxophone. Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks is a wonderful exploration of the possibilities that exist when you pair a traditional instrument with modern sampling techniques.

It is presented in the form of a virtual concert performance.

All in one, the structure is somewhat conventional with a soloist on soprano- and tenor saxophone, accompanied by a full orchestra or small instrumental groups like a jazz combo, a string quartet or a drum band. Sometimes one or two additional soloists act as ‘side kicks’ to the principal soloist.

All movements of this version of Die Fenster des Detlev Sierks are constructed with samples. In other words: virtual music for the virtual community!
With a weekend of wind and rain in the forecast, this will be an excellent soundtrack. I hope it works where you are right now.

BSWC One-a-Day: Funtastic Aif Master - Do Lock Money

Funky power!! Today's one-a-day is not creative commons, it comes from the open source audio collection on archive.org. Do Lock Money is one of several funktasmagorical tracks on this Funtastic Aif Master release. Groove, grind, bump, loud, high fidelity - lots of fun - reminds me a bit of the fun biotic and I had with Martinibomb.

From the email address in the archive.org meta data I was able to glean that this is the work of Fernando Dimare.

It's just a family affair.

BSWC One-a-Day: Maniax Memori - It's Not Jazzz

Well, I'm still mourning the loss of Candy Mind, but life moves on, eh?

The fourth BlocSonic compilation, netBloc vol. 4: Soundtrack for the Coming Revolution was released overnight. As I write this in a hotel in Boston I'm listening to another excellent collection of net music from BSWC favored sources such as archive.org, Jamendo and ccMixter.

A couple of the tunes have been featured on these pages...call that synergy.

The item from Maniax Memori really stood out for me. A track with some raw, but restrained power that you can feel building from the first note.

BlocSonic is an excellent project. They put together a mediated collection of net music, package it very nicely and do a good job with distribution. It is an excellent exercise in tastemaking in the CC licensed, netlabel world. Thanks, Michael.

BSWC One-a-Day: Dorothy's Magic Bag - Picassos Penis

Ok, this is an awesome track. I didn't choose it because it is named Picasso's Penis, however, that didn't hurt. It was also no surprise when I looked at the track notes and realized this is a track by none other than Dorothy's Magic Bag.

Sadly this is from the very last CandyMind release. CandyMind has apparently been purchased and closed down by the swedish netlabel Subnatura. Not sure what this means yet, nothing other than that smallish piece of information is available yet. Biotic sent me the disturbing news and a link to this phenomenal collection.

Enough with the depression! Download this track and then the whole release and enjoy!

BSWC One-a-Day: Mikey Murka - Sensi Addict

Wasn't so long ago that I posted Leutohm's "Real Chronic Smokers" on these pages. Well, after today's post NORML's got to really like this blog.

Today's selection
is from the netlabel, Jahtari.org. It has the rhythm, the arcade thing and the sound effects. Mikey Murka has some chops and I appreciate the what he has accomplished with this tune:
"Apart from Mikey's incredible vocal niceness this one includes rocking drummachine action, original spliff lighting sounds, smoked out surprises from beginning to end and loads of good vibes - simply a great and fun-packed document of the unforgettable times we had back in April when Mikey and Kris Kemist from Realityshock were over in Germany for some days full of Reggae music from dusk till dawn."
The release was a A-side/B-side Single with Jahtari artist Disrupt on the B-side. I think I played the A-side in Set #4 of something like three consecutive radio shows. I like it.

BSWC One-a-Day: Wshgaukd - Dullness

How can it be that every day there is so much new great music? This was just placed on archive.org this morning, ripe for consumption. The artist is Wshgaukd (possibly aka Leonid Zarubin), a self proclaimed Russian newcomer. There is not much more about Wshgaukd, but Bump Foot is a non-profit netlabel operating out of Japan organized by tatsu, selections from whom biotic and I have played over the air on WBCR.

This track has a nice dramatic feel. Clean and introspective, right up my alley.. I hope it's up your's.

:)

BSWC One-a-Day: Band of Mad Women - Take My Wings Away

Here is One-a-Day post number 101. Band of Mad Women are from Bulgaria.

The tunes on this release, Rodopted [ouimnet018] are a wonderful fusion of a world of inspiration. I played today's selection on last night's BSWC-The Show and was way impressed. I'm loving the sound.
"Surely a band like no other in the Bulgarian music history. If, for some strange chance, you have not yet heard their name and you hear their music at this moment, you would never believe they are bulgarians. BAND OF MAD WOMEN sound worldfamous. Don't think that we are playing jokes and this is some kind of an international project we are trying to sell you."
And, you don't have to take my word for it. Katya from Oddio Overplay posted a brief 5-star review on the release page at archive.org:
"Every time it plays there are more details revealed. This release keeps your attention, gives you surprises and takes you on voyages around the planet."
You will want to download the entire release.

BSWC One-a-Day: French Teen Idol - The Fleeting Beauty of a Butterfly

O.K. Let's stay with the Italian theme for a post or two. There is a new release from French Teen Idol. Huh?

That's right.

FTI is a project of Roman artist, Andrea Di Carlo. FTI has released two collections including the latest, Enlightened False Consciousness [LostChildren023].

The sound is sort of a atmospheric, post-rock combo that is hard to pin down and I think that is exactly what FTI is trying to accomplish.
"Melancholic piano patterns, dreamy atmospheres, vocal samples and striking instrumental crescendos, some of the ingredients of French Teen Idol's debut album, are sill there, enriched by the continuous search for new musical solutions, including a more classical "song-structure" approach in some tracks."
This was released on Lost Children. The previous FTI release was on the Nishi netlabel. You can hear an interview with FTI on the excellent Netwaves broadcast to podcast from Belgium.

From their recent Creative Commons release Boulevard of Broken Arses, the Ravenna, Italy group Ninefold Italy gives us Twist Tango. Rich layers of coyboy punk and expressive piano & guitar drive you deeper into the composition, building up and rocking out, piling on the detail, and ending with simple piano and ultimate clarity.

Awesome. The three track release is available on archive.org.

BSWC One-a-Day: Cube - Rampant Zoo Sex Orgy

I know what you're thinking, subsystem7 has a theme going, from STAR WHORES to Rampant Zoo Sex Orgy! Maybe so, but this came from an entirely new source. Biotic sent me a link to Netlabalism's by style search, fantastic! I selected exotica and found a 70 song list including many of my comfortstand favorites. Thanks Netlabelism.

Hailing from the ever-cool Pepper Mill records, this gem is part of a project called 30 Days - thirty days and thirty artists in a chain collaboration - each artist producing a song before midnight and passing the magic beads to the next artist. The result, an awesome release.

Dragnet, exotic drums, cut, mixed, computerized bliss! Cube is Sam Brady and Graham Teeling, both live in Dublin, Ireland.

BSWC One-a-Day: schlock! vs. Fujiya and Miyagi - Bring me back the pills

Welcome to Pahrump, by lVDd
BSWC welcomes STAR WHORES® to the Creative Commons Netlabel world! Brought forth just this past Sunday by sound artist Gianluca "Schlock!" Licciardi, STAR WHORES promises to bring us high quality dance, house, and electro-pop - non-commercial and Creative Commons. If this first release is any indication of what STAR WHORES has in store for the future we're in for some fantastic music.

When I find a release with so many quality tunes it is always hard to choose a song to post. I encourage you to download and listen to the entire release, some of my favorites include "feels so good," "arcus," "El Mono Loco," "Heartz" -- hell I like them all!

Just a note, if you do a google search for "Star Whores" the netlabel is not the first result

BSWC One-a-Day: White Owl - 15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest

This Neo-pirate shanty-like rock tune is from the Moscow-based White Owl. They describe themselves as "folk-core".
Since the tastes of the musicians don't belong to the same genre their arrangements are mixtures of such traditions as Alternative, Indie, Hard Rock, Hardcore, Disco, Folk Tradition and even Renaissance. The ways some folk standards such as "Lord of the Dance" or "Cunla" are presented can be taken for a joke. And this is true - it was a joke at first but then the WO found that the idea was well enough for taking it seriously.
I just discovered them and like what I hear so far on this darkening Sunday afternoon with Turkey Buzzards circling in the distance.

White Owl - 15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest

Thanks to the blog, FALK stands for FUCK ART - LETS KILL! Discovered WO via this post.
