BSWC One-a-Day: Tunturia - Cast Shadows on Clouds

If you are hankering for a post-rock hit, this post is for you.

The netlabel, Lost Children has posted their latest compilation, The Silent Ballet Volume 4 [lostchildren025]. The release features 13 tracks of what you might call post-rock, but there are probably other names for it...regular readers are probably aware of my avoidance of labels for CC flavored goodness.

I decided to share Tunturia's Cast Shadows on Clouds which features a building intensity that powers you right along. You can find out more about this band that hails from Toronto at their MySpace page:
Like the desolate yet majestic plains of the arctic north, Tunturia’s sound is at times both harsh and beautiful combining elements of post-rock, ambient soundscapes and experimental noise.
If you are in Burlington, Ontario tonight you can slip on down to the Red Rooster and hear them open for a band called City of a Hundred Spires.

The folks from Lost Children describe their series of compilations in the release notes:
Volume IV continues the tradition of showcasing new, innovative artists emerging onto the larger global scene. Many of these acts are supporting self-released CDs, and we strongly encourage listeners to delve deeper into those musicians that pique an interest. It is through your support that the community thrives.
Give this one a try and continue to support netlabel, Creative Commons licensed music.

BSWC One-a-Day: Ornament - She Sells Sea Shells

This was a particularly good day for archive.org diving, and it was hard to land on a selection. I kept being led from thing to thing, link ot link, idea to idea. If you've never done it, I highly recommend this discovery experience. Go to the audio section of archive.org and click see recent additions - enjoy the selection :)

She Sells Sea Shells comes in the middle of this experimental album and brings a nice fiddle riff without ignoring its electronica. Great to groove on, great sounds.

Ornament is a folktronica project of Dave Pask-Hughes, who says that this release is the last for while, as he plans on working on some vocal pieces. I liked every track of this release, Is Architect.

BSWC One-a-Day: buben vs school of exist - Firmament

I was attracted to a lot of feed activity about this artist in the last couple days. Had to try it out and very glad I did.

Buben is a electronic music advocate from Belarus. TV, Radio, production, you name it and he is involved in it. I picked this release from Earth Monkey called Caper [emp037].

The release notes have a lot more on Buben:

VLADISLAV BUBEN is a musician, promoter and creator of some radio and art projects from Belarus. Vladislav presents a TV show about alternative electronic music ”Are you called electronics?” on local MTV (Belarus) he has been doing this for 7 years. He also presents a radio show "The Lost World" (the oldest radio show in Belarus about extreme & alternative music.) on Radio "Mir" 107.1 FM. He is the main coordinator of.Lostworld webzine and label.

I'm off to explore some more. Enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Daghoti - Percipience fiction

My hunger for Creative Commons exotica can never be quelled. Yesterday, May 15 2007, WM Recordings released a various artists release called Mystic Moods [WM063]. Featuring some of my all time favorites like Jan Turkenburg, Lee Rosevere, and Happy Elf and also featuring a number of artists that I have never heard before. The notes summarize what this release delivers with "it's music for your undisputed pleasure...!" - I can't dispute that!!

I chose a track that I felt had a particularly good exotica feel to it, a little sex, a little spoken word, rich with stimulating sounds. Percipience fiction will stimulate you. This my first time listening to the work of Daghoti, and I am now digging for more. On WM he has a release from 2005 called i've got braces, too! [WM029] that you should check out.

Overall Mystic Moods is awesome! Make sure to download the entire experience. WMRecordings is consistently delivering interesting, fresh, and exceptionally thought provoking music - we're lucky to have such a netlabel.

BSWC One-a-Day: All About Max - Typing and Traveling

The Italian netlabel, Muertepop released this collection yesterday. The artist is All About Max.

Here you have a lovely, introspective set of tunes that somehow--without lyrics--very much tells a story.

Like eating a cake: the delicacy of Postal Service, Sufjan Stevens, The Album leaf and Death Cab For Cutie have inspired and sometimes influenced autobiographic facts told by Max.

Check this out and check out Muertepop for more.

BSWC One-a-Day: Stay Ali - Kastrull

Oh yes, this is a fab track. Nothing like getting my nintendo fix early on a Monday morning. Kastrull was just released on archive.org SB11-Stay_Ali. Nice, fast paced, bouncy, bitsy, everything's going to be all right, when you collect enough apple's to get to the next level sound.

The EP was posted on archive.org by superbuttons, a netlabel that I just learned about and look forward to digging through.

Have fun.

BSWC One-a-Day: Sminky - Puppies in Space

I've been following an interesting forum thread at archive.org about women and netlabel music. Sminky came up in the thread, although WM Recordings isn't sure of the artist's gender.

Today's selection is from a WM release, Before Live [wm043] that came out last June. Here is what WM has to say about Sminky:

Sminky lives in the legendary land of Siberia next to a huge pine forest. In his/her childhood she (he?) sang in a local church-choir and theatre and played violin. Later he (she?) tried to sing in different Siberian rock-groups. And now, for about two years she (he?) has just been sitting at home and doing music with his/her PC.
Lovely Tune. Hope you enjoy it.

BSWC One-a-Day: MC Jack in the Box - Nada

Oh, yeah.

Awesome mixter, MC Jack in the Box, notes that he was in a mood for guitars when he put this mix together. No doubt.

This was featured as an Editor's Pick at ccMixter last June. Definitely deserves to be included in the One-a-Day collection.

Nada features Columbian singer, Silvia O.

BSWC One-a-Day: Klaz* - Tosvin

It has been surprisingly warm in Berkshire County the past couple of days and this morning we were greeted by heavy rains which cooled the earth and calmed the approach of summer. The sun is just starting to come through the clouds as I post...

This is indeed a rare piece of music, and it is quite literally a piece: Tosvin is a part of the twenty-minute song Esdra from a coming release on WM Recordings, Glistqwid. Tosvin is a powerful soundscape which moves through several distinct modes in this single track - incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, natural and unnatural sounds. I'm really looking forward to Glistqwid, but for now, make sure you download this entire release, WM062 Kachtil which was added to the Creative Commons universe on the 8th of May, just three days ago.

BSWC One-a-Day: Brainsaw - Stalin's Will

With the photos coming out of Mother Russia these last few days of the celebrations of the sack of Berlin during the Great Patriotic War, it seemed only appropriate to go with this tune from Brainsaw.

I don't have much information. The release at archive.org enjoys tremendous popularity judging by the 100,000+ downloads. There does seem to be a bit of a quirk with the release page. The preview player plays this tune much faster than this VBR mp3.

I'm not sure which one I like more. The slow version has a menacing sound that appealed to me when I was younger. Just not sure if this is the way the artist intended it to be heard.
