BSWC One-a-Day: Aleksi Virta - Cosmos Bossa

Please welcome Aleksi Virta to the pages of One-a-Day. This insanely delicious release from our friends at Monotonik has been downloaded over 6000 times at Fans of the Internet Archive will recognize those as big numbers.

..Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge [mtk123]
is a quality release. It covers a lot of ground and has a creative depth that draws one further in one tune after another.

Virta is from Finland:
He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet.
Join us in joy.

BSWC One-a-day: Tim and Puma Mimi - Popkiller

What would I do without Starfrosch, the fabulous Swiss music blog?

They have come through again by alerting me to a new release by BSWC Fav's Tim and Puma Mimi. They have a new tune out that comes with a video release. The tune is called Popkiller.

It has that homegrown production style that brings to mind lower Eastside, NYC about 20-30 years ago. Very cool.

" spring 2004 we released the EP "The Adventures of Tim & Puma Mimi", on
We thought, that was it: Mimi had to go back to Japan and Tim stayed in Switzerland... But the little seed grew in the internet and came into real life: Radios started to play the songs, it was anounced in newspaper and after one year the first invitations came for concerts."
They are playing a very cool bill tonight in Zurich. You can catch them with Pureape, Freiraum, and Severin24 at Dynamo starting at 9:00 just couple hours from now.

Thank you, Starfrosch. Life is good.

BSWC One-a-Day: Mossa - Take One

Today: A classic from the venerable Montreal netlabel, Epsilonlab.

On this release, Town Hall ep [eps13] Mossa deconstructs a famous night in the history of jazz.

October 12, 1962 Charles Mingus and his band made jazz history at Town Hall in NYC.

With this release Mossa reinterprets the evening for the dance floor.

Today's selection also features a little of the Eloi Brunelle treatment.

Love it.

BSWC One-a-Day: Braces Tower - el fuego

A quick post to bring you a bit of electro-exotica. Here is Braces Tower from a Monotonik release, Pasteism [mtk131].

As the name suggests there is a little cutting and pasting going on here along with with some electronic manipulation. You have to love it...or not.

BSWC One-a-Day: Rasterfahndung - Pizzicato Suite (I Like This Pizzicato)

A lot of things going on here that I really like:

  1. I like Netwaves from Radio Scorpio in Belgium. They are neighbors of BSWC-The Show Saturday nights on the mothership, WBCR-lp (they come on right after us at 11:00 pm Eastern). I was listening to number 13 of their series last Saturday. They had a fantastic interview with Lawrence Lessig about Creative Commons. And, the music was great, including 3 or 4 songs that we have played and enjoyed on BSWC-The Show. Today's pick was number 4 in the set list. I like feeling kinship.
  2. Rasterfahndung is from Berne, Switzerland.
  3. Rasterfahndung fuses an electronic sound with acoustic instruments. Including the guitar of niklaus erismann and the laptop of marcel kägi. This tune also has some very sweet piano.
  4. " these days of foggy langscape-walks each track feels like eating a crispy pizza with various ingredients on a sunny terrace somewhere in the south."

BSWC One-a-Day: Harmsichord - Bad Buddhist

Just a buddhist monk with a rolex...
by Wam Mosely
On January 21st I posted a song by Harmsichord called Zigong Blues. I was impressed by the instrumentation and Harmsichord's fresh point of view. I rarely end up posting an artist's work on one-a-day more than once - simply because there is so much music out there to experience and enjoy. But today is the exception to the rule.

Honestly twisted, great rhythm, I love the vocals. This track is a good way to start your week. Grab a cub of coffee, put your headphones on, and take a bad ass car ride with a Bad Buddhist.

Are you a bad Buddhist?

Harmsichord can be contacted at ( harmsichord at yahoo dot com ).

BSWC One-a-Day: Fourstones - The Love of My Life (Purple House Mix)

Allright, here is a treatment of the other Jeremy Carr piece that is moving at ccMixter. This one for some reason is not a Editor's Pick.

I'm telling you right now, it is Biotic's Pick. This tune moves. Victor Stone aka Fourstones does some brilliant work and this mix really shows it.

It has twinkle and zap. Fourstones describes it as a "late-night, laptop, headphone mix".

Some might remember when Victor appeared on BSWC-The Show.

BSWC One-a-Day: Kcentric - Just One Night (K's Soul Kiss Mix)

The fun continues at ccMixter with the Jeremy Carr vocal work.

As previously mentioned on these pages, this accapella is getting a lot of attention and justifiably so. Today's selection was produced by one of the more soulful cats on the site, Kawaski "Kcentric" Nelson.

He honed his chops in Montgemery, Alabama with the blues, jazz, R&B and Gospel you find in those parts. It definitely shows up in his mixes.

Enjoy today's pick.

BSWC One-a-Day: MahdiLePtitAumVert - Habit De Lumiere

Corrida en Arles
Arles Bullfight (FRANCE)
by Michel@
Love the Freiraum post Biotic! This was selected as a follow-up, completely different vein, but after a tight clean groovy track shall come a heavy-ish, dirty-ish, thumping track... MahdiLePtitAumVert - Habit De Lumiere.

Little can be said of the artist (possibly Bertrand Dupuis) who posted this experimental track, since there was very little meta-data left behind, but Habit De Lumiere is French for "Bullfighter's costume." Once again an find, released into the cc world 11:29am this morning.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

BSWC One-a-Day: Freiraum - Fragile Feeling

Many thanks go out to Starfrosch for bringing the latest Alpinechic compilation to our attention. Alpinechic is the legendary Swiss netlabel based in Zurich.

Today's selection is a wonderful tune from a BSWC favorite (featured both on the show and in a BSWC Podex), Freiraum. The tune is something of a departure for them with pablo mateu & andreas freitag incorporating some great female vocals for a great up-beat lounge sound.

Of course, we shouldn't be surprised: an industry which likes to pigeonhole bands freiraum successfully defended its diverse repertoire. they are not only sound-fetishists but also created their own style that proves synthetic sounds can be more than just techno.

freiraum is in its element when boundaries are broken down! the success of the last albums/releases shows that the gimmicky style has found many friends among the electro and experimental music scene.
Alpinechic is hosting a release party in Zurich at Dynamo on March 30 with label artists Pureape, Tim and Puma Mimi, Freiraum, along with a special guest, Severin24. If we were going to be in Zurich on that Friday night we certainly would be there.

BSWC One-a-Day: Super Multifaros - Jan Telefon

That last Candymind post got me thinking... what about Super Multifaros? The latest release straight to you, SUPER MULTIFAROS - JAN TELEFON 034. Every track is bouncing with energy, smacking with goodness.

"Super Multifaros delivers a ear-wobbling release for all you stupid space harriers out there, loaded with a chippy tune for every occasion...and if you have ever wondered who really invented the phone, the lightbulb and the phonebook you will finally get the true answer here (in Swedish of course, the language of all true answers)."

If only Nintendo had hired Super Multifaros, the world of gaming would be a much better place.

BSWC One-a-Day: Psilodump - Feign Embrace

Here is a BSWC favorite for you. We have had the pleasure of featuring tunes by Swedish artist, Psilodump over the two years we have been doing this gig. This one is my all-time favorite.

I love the mystery. The sense of adventure that flows through the piece.

The tune is included on a Candy Mind release called The Night I Lost You All You All [Candy017].

One morning when he wakes up something is just wrong. A weird feeling is going up and down his spine and he doesn't really know what's up or down. Something is haunting Psilodump. He's packing his bags and sets out on a journey...
Join us on that journey.

BSWC One-a-Day: SxFxTxC - Shmen for the Children

I thought I'd start the week out right with some hardcore punk. Forgive the non-cc references, but it's like old Greenday, mixed with M.M.Bosstones, and a gigantic bull ring - but better ;) Heavy chainsaw overdriven guitar, guttural singing, relentless speed drumming, tireless bass - this album is a collaboration between and High-Fiber.

"SxFxTxC (Shmen For The Children) are a four-piece hardcore punk group from Maccabim-Re'ut, Israel. The band started playing together in the summer of 2004 when they were all staying in Berlin. SxFxTxC are here to save the world and bring destruction all at once."

BSWC One-a-Day: Yan Ots - Dancin' With The Sax (When I Went To Frisco Ben Crea Mix)

Fresh from comes Yan Ots via Russia. He just posted four mixes fusing House with a sax sound that keeps the feet moving.
This release consists out of 4 tracks which will easily take over the control on the dancefloor aswell as be the perfect mood-generator for those sunny days infront of us… Sexy, soul, funky… 3 fords that will generally tell you everything you need to know if you're about to hear this one out! Pure pleasure in musical cloathing – that's what this EP is and it's ready to be served to you at once! So..inhale..exhale.. Relax.
Enough said.

BSWC One-a-Day: Incoherent Mumble Train - February (Mumblemix)

On a day that feels like February here is a tune that meets the moment.

Today's selection was an editor's pick at ccMixter. The tune uses 'pellas posted by Calendar Girl as part of her Calendar Songs project. Her plan: "I WRITE ONE SONG A MONTH. YOU REMIX AND FEEDBACK. WE MAKE A RECORD."

Incoherent Mumble Train has posted his January and February remixes to ccMixter. February is sweet.

Calendar Songs began in October 2006. Everything on the Calendar Songs site carries a Creative Commons license. We are currently waiting for March.

BSWC One-a-Day: Thiaz Itch - Chevile

I love following a Coconut Monkey Rocket post with fantasmagorical exotica. From WMRecordings, Thiaz Itch released El baile de los fantasmas WM059 on March 5th. For reasons not completely clear to me

They post this album as:

"a collection of horror and frightening musics from 2005 to 2007. It blends dark ambient and ghostly beats together, recounting a phantasmal stunning story."

El baile de los fantasmas works very well as a complete composition. It begins with Heute Mplon, a 1 minute intro reminiscent of both The Nutcracker and March to the Scaffold, the 4th movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. But it's not done yet, the album mixes low fi electonic sounds with haunting melodies and fast moving beats.

Awesome, awesome joy for subsystem7!! I hope you find some joy...

BSWC One-a-Day: The Coconut Monkeyrocket - Illogical Boogie

Thanks to the fine folks over at Blogio Oddio for putting The Coconut Monkeyrocket back on our radar screens. Today's selection is a rollicking number from a self-titled combo EP with Martinibomb that was released by comfortstand [CSR016].

The Coconut Monkeyrocket has released a brand new Compact Disc (remember those things...). It is called With Birds.

From the Comfortstand release notes:
A one man music project out of Tallahassee, Florida, The Coconut Monkeyrocket A.K.A. Jason Emmett assembles layers and layers of samples together to make a cartoonish dance racket.
We also had a pleasant chat with Jason on BSWC-The Show early last year when he was working on his latest project.

BSWC One-a-Day: Deutscheunschuld - Just one night-DU-remix/edit

It has been over a year, but DU is back! One of my all-time favorite mixters returned to ccMixter yesterday. His last mix was uploaded in April 2006. The Creative Commons remix site can be like that...someone is active and then drifts away only to return with a big bang. More smiles all around.

DU is working with a vocal track that currently has a lot of traction among the mixters. Jeremy Carr has uploaded a wonderfully smooth and sexy vocal that is being worked into all kinds of sweet mixes.

BSWC One-a-Day: Lucky Misu - How to Hold on Tight

It's a pop, wait it's not a pop song...aaahhh, it's pop for a new century.

Today's selection is from the latest release on the netlabel, Corpid. The collection is entitled Puzzled and you can find it at

Lucky Misu is Daniel Bergstrom. Daniel is from Sweden. He knows Bobby Baby (she designed the cover art).

The release notes contain some backstory:
"The idea of Lucky Misu jumped out of my head in 2003. At first I wanted it to be a band but then I thought of all the things I don´t like about beeing in a band (rehearsing) and decided it to be a one man act."
You can also enjoy his remix for Bobby Baby's I Wont Dance With You Baby Tonight to be included on Corpid's "Loves To Remix vol.2" release.

BSWC One-a-Day: Elmaes - 5 (Cookie five goes mad in East Dulwich)

From WMRecordings (one of my absolute favorite netlabels) WM060: Elmaes - Geburah! Variations on the number 5; another big winner.
"You can't use butterfly language when speaking to a caterpillar."

The entire release drives forward as if as a whole containing the ambition and desire to find resolution through a pervasive chant. Yet, it is fabulous in its ability to keep you from finding a place of easy resolution, rather your brain is firing and questioning from beginning to end. Voice, percussion, and instrumentation woven cunningly together. I like the dialog created with a foundation of the sitar and tablas layed heavy with cyclical british vocals.

I hope you enjoy.

Elmaes - 5 (Cookie five goes mad in East Dulwich)

Mar 11, 2007

BSWC One-a-Day: Matt Elliot - Our Weight in Oil

This tune is included on a brand new compilation from the excellent netlabel, The Silent Ballet aka The Lovely Ballet (I know there must be a story there). The compilation which just appeared on is called 2007 Rhâââ Lovely Festival Compilation and documents the artists that appeared at the festival.

The event is a Belgian indie post-rock festival that takes place at Cortil-Wodon, in rural Wallonia.

Our Weight in Oil is a quiet, beautiful tune that is perfect for a lovely Sunday in March.

More about Matt Elliot from his website:
"The Third Eye Foundation is Matt Elliott from Bristol, UK. In the early nineties, Elliott was an occasional member of fellow Bristolians Flying Saucer Attack and AMP. The name Third Eye Foundation first appears on Flying Saucer Attack's self-titled first album, where he receives credits on several tracks. As guitarist, drummer, programmer and viola player, he appears on several of AMP's early records, two of which are released on Elliott's own label, Linda's Strange Vacation (the name taken from an early Bristol band that featured many members that would later appear in bands like Crescent, Light, Philosopher's Stone and AMP)."
Enjoy today's selection.

BSWC News: Mothership Holds Fund Drive

I wanted to take a little time to drop a note on the blog about our WBCR-LP Fund Drive. Many of you know that BSWC-The Show airs on this little Low Power FM station in the Berkshire hills of Massachusetts (simulcast on KWMD, 90.7 in Kasilof, AK, but that's another story). After it airs, we pull the mp3 file from the station's computers, edit it a smidgeon and put it up on for podcasting.

If you look around the blog you will see no advertising. You will find nothing commercial on this site. However, keeping WBCR-LP as a going concern is vital to continuing the services that you find around you at Black Sweater, White Cat.

I would ask regular visitors and listeners to contribute to our fund drive today or tomorrow in support of BSWC and our mothership, WBCR-LP. You can do it online, over there in the sidebar or call us at (413) 644-9797. We are not a corporate public radio enterprise by any means. This is people putting radio together for people...sound familiar?

Tell them Biotic sent you.

Thank you for your time and support.

BSWC One-a-Day: Peter Fox Simon - I Wish

Wow! What a find. From an Austrian Netlabel (via Starfrosch) comes Peter Fox Simon with this fantastic tune, I Wish.

On his MySpace page Peter says he is from Vienna. This is all I have on this artist. I'm grooving on the sound.

The Netlabel, Jhruza, is using CC licensing to post teasers from their releases online. There are 4 of 8 songs from Simon's release, Instant Future, posted at their site.

Sample some Peter Fox Simon today.

BSWC One-a-Day: Gondwana - Aire de Jah

I have almost nothing on this artist or tune. Some upbeat reggae sounds for your Friday afternoon.

Just posted on mean really, really fresh material. I'm thinking they are from Argentina, but I'm kinda reading between the lines there and could be wrong.

Gondwana - Aire de Jah

Photo Credit: Nation of Gondwana 2005 by viernullvier

[update: I'm a little shame-faced to admit that further research on Gondwana reveals that they are prolific Latin-american reggae band with quite a number of commercial releases to their credit. They are from Chile. Aire de Jah is from their latest release, Resiliente. The release found at carries a CC license and I have written to the band's management to confirm the licensing.]

BSWC One-a-Day: Revolution Void - Obscure Terrain

Obscure Terrain is the name of the tune, Revolution Void is the name of project and Jonah Dempcy is behind it all. Obscure Terrain is contained in a marvelous release called Increase the Dosage.

Jonah has done a good job getting this material out there with 13,000 downloads in 2006 from sites like and Jamendo.

The sound is a mix of jazz and electronic sounds that really pulls together into a smooth and groovy mix.

Here is a snip from Alex Young's Milieu blog about the release:
Increase the Dosage combines breakbeat and melodic electronica in a charming way that makes for something not only worth listening to, but also something you’ll keep coming back to for years to come.
That is a good point. Jonah has really put together some stick-to-your-ribs music. It is easy to see myself coming back to this release in 5 to 10 years and grooving again.

BSWC One-a-Day: droog - alles ist hermoso

From Belgrade comes an excellent track due for release tomorrow to coincide with International Women's Day. Richly layered "alles ist hermoso" (translated from German and Spanish: Everything is beautiful ??) delivers a vibrant and funky experience, with little surprises built in for the second and third listen.

This track is taken from droog's second release on Norbu and the third release from this fresh new netlabel. "Norbu is a Belgrade-based netlabel specializing in minimal, idm and ambient sounds."

This is my first post for quite an number of days, I don't know what happened, sometimes I just lose my way - thanks to biotic for always picking up the slack.

Enjoy this fresh track.

BSWC One-a-Day: LeutOhm - The Real Chronic Smokers

Here a sweet little tune from an EP called Fluid [ac002] that was released by the Swiss netlabel, Alpinechic in February 2004. I've played LeutOhm a few times on BSWC-The Radio Show and for some reason I have always picked this song. Go figure. The rest of the release is excellent, but for some reason I'm drawn to today's selection.

LeutOhm is from Paris and believes in "sweet beatz & funky soundz to shake your babes to".

This was the second release from Alpinechic. It is billed as downbeat and sexy. Can't disagree with that assessment. commenter, Transient sort of pinned down the mood:

"...excellent downtempo for chillin' in your pj's and puffin' down a doob. Quality."
Be sure to check out the entire release, you will be glad you did.

BSWC One-a-Day: Nic Bommarito - Once a Freak, Always a Freak

This tune is from a wonderful collection of music by Nic Bommarito and was released at the end of January by the netlabel, 12rec. Today's selection is an artfully quiet piece. 12rec used a keyword that I found really appealing: "Dreampop".

According to the release notes, Nic has studied philosophy in Ann Arbor and Albuquerque before moving to Tibet in 2006.

"Nic Bommarito is a talented musician, too. He got in contact with us in late 2006, and we spontaneously decided to release his Taciturn LP at 12rec.

The Taciturn LP fuses instrumental Rockmusic with moments of Alt. Country and epic Indiepop, keeping an eye on melody and structure. Imagine a mixture of Canadian GY!BE, the Americana Avant-Garde of Chicago's Brokeback and the huge melodies of Italian Postrockers Giardini di Mirò."
Enjoy this piece, I know I did.

BSWC One-a-Day: The Mordekkers - Peterstorm/Cheese on Toast/Heaven's Bwre

The Mordekkers are from Wales. I found them with a quick search of with the keyword, "bagpipes", but a search with the keywords, "progressive folk"; "trance folk"; "trance-folk"; "psych folk"; "psych-folk"; "psychfolk"; "acid folk"; "psychedelic"; "psychedelia"; and "Wales" among others, would have turned them up.

As it has already been demonstrated in these pages, I'm not adverse to cultural fusion and these guys have it. The Mordekkers are Peni Piper - bagpipes, pibgorn, folk oboe, whistle; Stef - mandola, concertina; Henry Willatts - bass; and Jez King - drums. They successfully fuse a traditional celtic sound with a driving rhythm section.

They will be on the stages of the Spring Knockengorroch Celtic/World Music Festival, May 18-20. If I happened to be in Scotland that weekend, you know I would be there.

The release is called Wild Roots and was released at in August.

BSWC 3.3.07: Time for a Rerun

I've got a party to go to tonight so it is time for a rerun. I picked a show that I really enjoyed from earlier this year (so at least the weather is cold in both the Berkshires and Kasilof).

You can find the playlist and audio file here.
"It is Saturday and time for another BSWC Radio Show. We have some francophone rap, chinese electronica, polish ska, anti-consumerism and some out and out, huh?"

"Hello, what's the trouble?"

It seems that there is no end in sight on Every day a massive number of audio files are uploaded, and every time I look I find lots of great stuff to listen to. Today's track has a great bass line and a quirkiness totally worth your music library. Might be great in a movie.

Kittenfish Mountain is Trevor Thornton (and on on myspace) - who I can't seem to find much about, but he's released some wonderful music into the cc world.

BSWC One-a-Day: Jasmin - Heute im Stadion

A quick post to put this one out there. From the netlabel, 12rec here is Jasmin in a 2005 release that you can find at

The release is called EP 02 [12rec.027] The tune, Heute im Stadion has a real nice sound to it. I guess that you would call it "post-rock" if you were looking for a tag. Of course, I've been known to use "music" as a tag...probably not very effective.

12rec described the tune on the release notes:

"...heute im stadion is jasmin's version of contemporary hardrock. the title refers to 'stadium' and can be read as an ironical statement concerning huge rockband-riffing."
Here's to a good weekend. Enjoy.

BSWC One-a-Day: Mika Martini - Whyno

Today, we are staying with our Latin theme (I'm still in San Juan, hoping that my flight home doesn't get cancelled). The name of this release is Mestizo. It is an excellent collaboration that runs through a series of moods and colors. Dated February 1, 2007, it was just released at

Contributors to this tune include: Jose Perez de Arce, Lluvia Acida, and Pablo Cornejo.

One of the things that attracted me right away was the juxtiposition of the keywords "glitch" and "folklore". You know something special is happening when you see that.

"Mestizo" is a mixture of electronics and ancient local sounds and voices. The idea is finding a language based in our historical sound memory, but firmly placed in the present day."
